Jammul vs Duolingo

Duolingo and Jammul start from different ideas. Duolingo's main app is short exercises built around reading and tapping, and Duolingo ABC teaches young children to read in English. Jammul needs no reading: it talks with your child out loud, starts in Saudi Arabic and adds English gradually for children aged 2 to 7.

They drill, we talk

Duolingo's strength is short daily exercises and the streak that brings you back every day. That is great for someone who reads and enjoys a challenge. But a three- or four-year-old can't read yet, and needs to hear a word, say it, and use it in real speech.

In Jammul the child hears a word with a picture, plays a “listen and pick the picture” game, then has a short conversation with their friend using the lesson's words. The tutor understands if the child mixes Arabic and English, and answers in their dialect.

What about Duolingo ABC?

Duolingo ABC is a free app that teaches reading in English: letters, sounds and short words. It is useful for a child who speaks English and wants to read it. A child who knows no English first needs to understand words and say them, which is what Jammul focuses on, with letter-sound units for children from age 5.

Is a free app enough?

Free apps are a good start for recognising words. If you notice your child memorises words but never uses them when speaking, or needs someone to explain in their own language, that is where a tutor who talks with them helps.

Frequently asked questions

Is Duolingo suitable for a 4-year-old?

The main app relies on reading, so it suits older children. For younger ones there is Duolingo ABC, which teaches reading. Jammul is designed for ages 2–7 and needs no reading.

How is Jammul different from vocabulary apps?

Vocabulary apps train a child to recognise words. Jammul adds conversation: the child uses the word in real speech with a character who understands their dialect and remembers what they learned.

Can my child use Duolingo and Jammul together?

Yes. An older child can practise words in an app and use them in conversation with Jammul.
